The landscape of tobacco consumption and harm reduction has been evolving rapidly in recent years, and South Africa is no exception to this trend. As of 2023, the concept of tobacco harm reduction has gained significant traction, with alternative nicotine delivery systems, like vaping, at the forefront of discussions.
At the passing of Vape Con 2023 held in Pretoria, South Africa, parliament sought no inclusion of participation to understand the community other than being present to explain the pending tax bill.
Tobacco harm reduction centers on the idea that while quitting tobacco altogether is the ideal solution, there may be more pragmatic steps to mitigate the harms associated with traditional cigarette smoking. Conventional tobacco products contain numerous harmful chemicals and toxins, which are the primary contributors to health issues, such as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory ailments. The harm reduction approach aims to offer smokers less harmful alternatives, thereby reducing the health risks they face.
Vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes, has emerged as a leading contender in the realm of harm reduction. These devices work by heating a liquid solution containing nicotine and other components, and producing an aerosol that users inhale.
The absence of combustion significantly reduces exposure to harmful chemicals found in traditional cigarettes. Vaping has been proven to be at least 95% less harmful than combustible tobacco and twice as effective in helping tobacco users quit smoking.
Vape Con served as a platform for stakeholders to delve into the multifaceted aspects of vaping and its role in tobacco harm reduction. However, this year Vape Con 2023 was packed full of vendors from factories outside of South Africa. It seemed that the local community has dwindled and shied away from the South African economy. From previous years, Vape Con used to be packed with local vendors, shops, brands and consumers, whereas at Vape Con 2023, majority of the vendors present, were disposable factories. No doubt we will see a further economic decline in the local vaping community, who has already helped thousands of South Africans quit lethal tobacco, as the new Control Of Tobacco Products And Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems Bill passes.
Tobacco harm reduction and events like Vape Con 2023 represent a significant shift in public health perspectives. The ultimate goal remains a smoke-free society. Harm reduction strategies recognize the complex nature of addiction and dependency, and aim to provide smoke-free solutions for those struggling to quit smoking.
