Yearly, almost 400,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer worldwide.
It has been established that the use of smokeless tobacco is a major risk factor for the development of oral cancer. However, the link between the use of Swedish snus and oral cancer was unclear.
Araghi et al at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden published an extensive review on snus, based on nine major cohort studies. Through linkage to health registers, the team used pooled individual data from the Swedish Collaboration on Health Effects of Snus Use to follow up on 418,369 male participants for oral cancer incidence.
9,201,647 person-years of observation led to the findings that, compared to never-snus use, ever-snus use was not associated with oral cancer, and snus use among never smokers was not associated with oral cancer. There is thus no link between Swedish snus use and the development of oral cancer in men.
